Since I've been working as a voiceover actor, I keep finding myself looking for new gear all the time. New microphones, interfaces, preamplifiers, mostly for a simple reason: trying to sound "better."
I try to maintain a quality, which sounds good for me, and also for the client. I believe maintaining a durable, strong reputation always has to do something with your studio background (including your gear of course).
Meeting all the requirements and also working with a smile on the face in a session is always challenging.
Hear more about how I do this in my review of the Neumann TLM 103.
Must Be Tough Being a Legend!
By Ákos Hunyad
Gear plays a huge role in making you comfortable or completely jittery when recording your job. Through the years, I've had a lot of equipment, always according to "today's fashion of sound." A lot of tech-toys have lost the battle, but what's still in my microphone locker - and always will be, is my Neumann TLM 103.
I believe the best gear is the one you just have to turn on and off. No hassles, pots, switches, just pure performance. We also have to keep in mind, that most voiceover talent are not gear junkies - they just want to do their job, deliver in time and receive payment.
I've been using my TLM 103 for years and I couldn't count how many valuable minutes of work it saved for me. It just stands there, listens and records - clearly and precisely.
Both a good first investment for newbies or a massive workhorse mic for a professional engineer, the TLM 103 always delivers quality recordings. This microphone works for narration, promos, trailers, you name it.
And most importantly: it lets YOU decide, how you want to sound. It doesn't add and it doesn't take away. The Neumann makes you sound just the way you do- no more, no less. It's a legend, and it's a Neumann. But that's a whole other story...
