Responses To Our First Job

JacolFilmworksLogo.jpgWOW! We are new to Voices.com. Yesterday we posted our first job with short script and today we had 61 responses from earnest and talented people. I cannot believe it has taken this long to find you - you have made our work so much easier - such an incredible service. We are so happy with this process. Incredible!

The VO will be used to narrate a short internet video for Quincy Valley (Washington) Tourism. The narrator we selected, Dave Pettitt, describes 17 million years of geologic history in Eastern Washington state in three minutes. The remaining 1.5 - 2 minutes of the video will show the recreational paradise that same area is today. It will be used on the internet, smart phones and we will likely submit it for a Telly or other awards. We were quite happy to work with Dave whom we would have never known about without Voices.com.

The target market is those who are interested in Washington State - tourists, specifically rock climbers, hikers, bicyclists, boaters, and a large crowd of people interested in geology and rocks. The video will be shared on Facebook and the Quincy Valley Tourism website.

The most important criteria for our voice talent was: Does their voice portray the story? Can they draw the audience in with their intonations and expressions in such a way that a visceral connection is made between the hearing "eye" and the image - thereby gluing the audience to what they see? Do they understand the power of their own voice and love what they do?

We (JACOL Filmworks, LLC) are a small production company in Eastern Washington. We specialize in web and training videos and when we aren't working on that, we are working on documentaries.

Just Wanted to Say Thank You

iStock_000002308057XSmall.jpegI just wanted to say thank you for a great 6 months so far as a member of Voices.com!

I joined in November of 2011 just after recently being signed to an agency for voice over. Being new, it was very slow in terms of getting auditions through my agency, too slow (being non-union does not help). It was discouraging and I began to question whether or not I made the right decision to devote time to pursue this as a career.

I wasn't sure what to do, as I was not getting much in terms of auditions, and with no auditions, there would be no practice or development. Even though I am young, I began to feel that I should go back to University, maybe throw in the towel and give up on my dreams of acting and voice over.

But a good friend mentioned you guys to me. I decided, what the hay, I'll give it a shot! And 6 months later, I have landed 30 jobs and auditioned for hundreds of scripts which have lead me to develop my voice, find my niche and build a portfolio of work that I would have never have had the opportunity to do if not for you guys.

Though its tough to have to be near a computer all the time, I love this work, and the potential opportunities you provide. For me, it has given me the confidence to know that this is possible, that I have what it takes, and that with continuous hard work, this "is" something I can do as a career.

At Voices.com, I feel you provide opportunities. Ones which allow its talent to determine and realize their potential. To understand themselves and grow as artists. Without this site, I can assure you that I would not be where I am today in voice over. I'm not even sure I would still be calling myself a voice actor.

And for that, I say THANK YOU!

Joshua Graham

51 of 85 Auditions And I Got The Job!

Dan_4.JPGI'm writing to share about my most recent booking through Voices.com. Specifically, I've read observations on social networking websites and reviews about how winning bookings through Voices.com "is such a numbers game, you need to submit your audition faster than any other applicants, forget about ever getting reviewed if you're not one of the first to respond..." and so on.

Now, I realize that the "Pay to Play" marketplace is not for everyone, and it is very easy to get discouraged when you see so many other talents landing jobs you "know" you should have gotten, if only you had been poised over your computer when the listing popped up, and you had the chance to beat everyone else to the audition but this really was not the case with my latest job.

I responded to an "Educational" listing by submitting my primary demo, which includes samples of my teaching and narration delivery. When the job "Closed" on the Hiring board, I was listed as submission 51 of 85. The client responded to my submission with a request for a sample reading of their text, and from that custom read, I was awarded the job.

The client shared with me that he had listened to close to 90 submissions and chose me because he liked my voice and "teaching" delivery, I had placed an emphasis on "reading to instruct," and indicated that he would like to collaborate on future educational projects!

In my experience, the Voices.com marketplace is just that - a marketplace. There is a lot of competition for the jobs that are listed, and I'm sure that many talent feel the urge that to be "first in line" is the only sure way to be awarded a job. In this case, my marketing plan of responding to a listing with a demo that was specific to the client's needs, and following up with a custom read, in a timely manner, moved me from #51 to #1!

Many thanks to the team at Voices.com for a service that puts me out in front to those who need the best of what I do - teach!
