Responses To Our First Job
WOW! We are new to Voices.com. Yesterday we posted our first job with short script and today we had 61 responses from earnest and talented people. I cannot believe it has taken this long to find you - you have made our work so much easier - such an incredible service. We are so happy with this process. Incredible!
The VO will be used to narrate a short internet video for Quincy Valley (Washington) Tourism. The narrator we selected, Dave Pettitt, describes 17 million years of geologic history in Eastern Washington state in three minutes. The remaining 1.5 - 2 minutes of the video will show the recreational paradise that same area is today. It will be used on the internet, smart phones and we will likely submit it for a Telly or other awards. We were quite happy to work with Dave whom we would have never known about without Voices.com.
The target market is those who are interested in Washington State - tourists, specifically rock climbers, hikers, bicyclists, boaters, and a large crowd of people interested in geology and rocks. The video will be shared on Facebook and the Quincy Valley Tourism website.
The most important criteria for our voice talent was: Does their voice portray the story? Can they draw the audience in with their intonations and expressions in such a way that a visceral connection is made between the hearing "eye" and the image - thereby gluing the audience to what they see? Do they understand the power of their own voice and love what they do?
We (JACOL Filmworks, LLC) are a small production company in Eastern Washington. We specialize in web and training videos and when we aren't working on that, we are working on documentaries.

Bill Painter Gave Us a Read That Made Our Project Live!
We found Bill Painter on Voices.com for our current project: THE MAGYK TSAR, which required just the right read to convey the opulence of The Imperial Russian Court, but also the romance and fantasy that is the focus of our play. We auditioned over 14 male voices, and all were capable artists with good "commercial" voices, but missing was that something extra. Bill Painter gave us a read that made our project live!
He responded within hours, and we had our project completed within 12 hours of starting the hunt for voice talent.
Bill's demo showed his wide range for characters, straight reads, and accents. In our particular case, he gave us the delightful fairy-tale inflection, characterization, and emotion that we were day-dreaming about, but never thought we'd find! When I came to voices.com, I put out a job request for a video game character with a Chinese accent. Ed's demo was so impressive, I had him submit an audition for three other characters as well.
With a total of an hour's worth of dialogue, I was blown away by both the sound quality of the recordings and the quality of the acting. I required absolutely no rereads of any part of the script. During the recording process, Ed asked me whenever he had questions about pronunciation or intonation just to be sure he could provide what I was looking for the first time out. I was amazed by the responses that we received and I was also surprised by the differences in all of them. I never realized how much it could be different but measuring them against each other, it does become a bit clearer.
Why did we select Jennifer?
Jennifer did a read through and paid particular attention to the emphasis of the message and using her voice to provide that emphasis in an effective manner. While many voice talent did this (we received over 60 auditions), some actually read later parts to differentiate themselves from the others which is either by luck or by the knowledge that they are competing and wanted to show their abilities by differentiating the message delivered.
While Jennifer did read the main message like many others, it was such a difference from everyone else that even after listening to the additional 30 auditions, she still remained the clear choice.
She has been wonderful to work with so far as we are beginning to experiment with adding background music to our main message.
