President Lincoln honoured by Grandfather-Granddaughter voice over team

Published by Lin Parkin

February 15, 2012

With Presidents' Day just around the corner, globally recognized voice actor Skip Orem partnered with his granddaughter to create a video about Lincoln's Gettysburg address.

The project is narrated by Skip's granddaughter, eight-year-old Patricia Orem, and is meant to be used for educational purposes. It tells the story of President Lincoln's famous speech dedicating the Civil War Battlefield at Gettysburg Pennsylvania on November 19, 1863. Skip plays a number of supporting character roles and used his experience as an audio engineer to produce the video.

Orem is a professional actress and her work on the project was her first foray into the world of voice over. About his experience working with her Skip said, "It was rewarding for me because I got to work with my granddaughter and use my decades of off-camera experience to introduce her to voice work."

More and more educators are using online resources to do research and engage their students. Skip thought that making the video available for free on his new website and YouTube channel would help peak interest in the significance of the Gettysburg address.

Skip said of the project, "I thought it would be a neat way to let young kids know the human and emotional part of the Gettysburg event. That way, as they continue to learn about it in school, it will become more than just a date and a place. Who knows, it may excite a special interest in the subject of history in someone."

The video can be viewed by visiting one of the following pages:

Voice Over Community Petitioning the Oscars

Published by Lin Parkin

April 4, 2011

oscars_petition2care_w_logo_200x160.pngToday the voice over community bands together lobbying for their industry to be recognized at the Oscars.

Currently the Academy recognizes just four acting awards. Animated films are eligible for the Best Picture and Animated Feature Film categories but there is no category to honour the voice actors in these films.

Voices.com initiated the idea for a change to the Oscars program on their Facebook Group. When the company asked if talent were willing to not only talk the talk but also walk the walk and sign a petition lobbying for a voice over performance category, the fan-base gave them a resounding thumbs-up.

"Our initial research shows that many people are in support of the Academy Awards introducing a category for voice over performance," says Stephanie Ciccarelli, Voices.com Chief Marketing Officer. "We were amazed by the outpouring of support in our endeavor to get the ball rolling in this regard. Recognition in the form of an Oscar for voice actors not only acknowledges their work at this level but also esteems voice acting and its significant contribution to film."

The purpose of the petition is to achieve recognition for actors who perform behind the scenes. Outstanding voice over performances breathe life into animated films thereby creating iconic characters that are memorable, lovable and real. Recognizing the art of voice acting by designating a voice over performance category for voice actors in the Oscars could result in the fulfillment of many collective dreams.

Voices.com Releases New Service: Puts Talent on the Map

Published by Lin Parkin

October 26, 2010

local_voices_525.jpg October 25th marked the launch of "Local Voices," a new service from Voices.com offering voice over talent the opportunity to market themselves directly to potential clients within their own cities.

Local Voices utilizes Google Maps, Bing Local, and Yahoo Local Search, employing local map listings, Internet yellow pages (IYPs) and local franchise advertising. Voice talent who sign up for the service are able to expand their online visibility and drive qualified contacts to their profiles so that they can work with local producers in addition to the online casting calls that the site already delivers on a daily basis.

Local Voices helps streamline the casting needs for producers wanting to work with local talent, saving them time and money in audition costs. Local Voices eliminates the need for 'cattle-calls', allowing businesses, producers, casting directors, and agencies to do the preliminary research online, pinpointing the voice over talent that they would like to work with in a local recording studio.

This service is available to members of the Voices.com website who are at the Platinum or Premium level. To be included in the Local Voices service, members log in to their accounts, fill out the Local Voices form, and follow the simple directions.

David Ciccarelli, Voices.com co-founder/CEO, says "Local Voices brings our online presence offline, expanding Voices.com's reach and enabling people to find talent through local searches on Google, Yahoo!, Bing and other prominent engines."

Voices.com Member Bill Kates is Bringing Radio Theatre Back to the Masses

Published by Lin Parkin

September 23, 2010

UniverseInHand.jpgRadio theatre is experiencing something of resurgence, thanks to people like Bill Kates, a 30 year veteran of the voice over industry. Kates comes from a storied background, having worked in radio imaging, production, and sound design for major market radio; from underground FM to Howard Stern's flagship station to years of satellite radio.

Through his years in radio, theatre, film and television, Kates has always maintained a passion for radio theatre, and has been producing and performing in radio theatre productions since the late 70's. With the advent of on-line radio, radio theatre is streaming to a different kind of audience and new generations are getting in on the drama.

"Radio theatre engages the imagination of the listener personally and directly, and actually can have a stronger emotional resonance than film or TV, because one makes the pictures in his or her own head. It's an ideal form for long car trips, or for any time you'd be listening to an audiobook." Kates explains, "Anyone who starts to explore radio theatre from, the 'Golden Age' classics of the 1930s-50s, to the modern masters of the practice, realizes what a blast it is... it's just a matter of spreading the word about it."

Recently Kates completed a series of ten 'mini' radio plays by the author Ziv Navoth called "Nanotales" that will be launched on a special website coming soon.

For a sneak peek of "Nanotales", go to,

About Bill Kates

Bill Kates is a writer, vocal performer, musician, producer and director operating out of his New York studio. He trained and worked as a professional actor in New York's Off Broadway world from the age of six through the age of twenty. He hit the ground running and began creating off-beat skits and parodies for the legendary WBCN in Boston, where he worked for twelve years. Kates went on to become production director at K-ROCK in New York with Howard Stern for 8 years, then ventured into public radio and eventually to (Sirius) XM Satellite as New York Director of Production. Bill's passion for radio theatre is evident in his other work, such as innovative sound design for an upcoming Official Star Wars® game, and the many vocal styles and characters his clients utilize him for in TV commercials. A recent Bill Kates project is this TV ad campaign for Emmy winning Voices.com clients Gil Seltzer and Christopher Hicken, in a bit of an homage to voiceover legend Jackson Beck: http://vimeo.com/13953431
