President Lincoln honoured by Grandfather-Granddaughter voice over team
With Presidents' Day just around the corner, globally recognized voice actor Skip Orem partnered with his granddaughter to create a video about Lincoln's Gettysburg address.
The project is narrated by Skip's granddaughter, eight-year-old Patricia Orem, and is meant to be used for educational purposes. It tells the story of President Lincoln's famous speech dedicating the Civil War Battlefield at Gettysburg Pennsylvania on November 19, 1863. Skip plays a number of supporting character roles and used his experience as an audio engineer to produce the video.
Orem is a professional actress and her work on the project was her first foray into the world of voice over. About his experience working with her Skip said, "It was rewarding for me because I got to work with my granddaughter and use my decades of off-camera experience to introduce her to voice work."
More and more educators are using online resources to do research and engage their students. Skip thought that making the video available for free on his new website and YouTube channel would help peak interest in the significance of the Gettysburg address.
Skip said of the project, "I thought it would be a neat way to let young kids know the human and emotional part of the Gettysburg event. That way, as they continue to learn about it in school, it will become more than just a date and a place. Who knows, it may excite a special interest in the subject of history in someone."
The video can be viewed by visiting one of the following pages:

His background includes significant training and education in voice acting and audio engineering. His degree from The Ohio State University is in Marketing. Former CNN Broadcaster Gives College Students New Voice
Connecticut-based voice actor Paula Lin is using her expertise to help Gateway Community College continuing education students enter the world of voice over (VO). Building on the success of an introductory VO class she planned and helped launch this fall, Lin is teaching two new courses on the subject starting in January.
Intensive Introduction to Voice Over offers aspiring voice actors an overview of the creative and business processes involved in starting and managing a career in the VO industry. Lin will also help her students test and develop the vocal skills needed to record tracks for professional use. Classes will be held between January 21, 2012 and April 21, 2012.
Intermediate Voice Over, runs from February 11 to May 19, 2012. In this class series, Lin focuses on helping students gain experience with script reading and copy analysis. Through more intensive practicing, she will help her pupils build on their strengths and identify the best genres to target as they launch their VO careers.
Lin was the driving force behind the creation of the VO program at Gateway Community College and taught its first class series this fall. Introduction to Voice Over had full enrolment and was very well received.
Susannah Eldridge said of her experience, "Paula Lin is a wonderful teacher! She established from the beginning an environment of respect and appreciation for each student. She was direct, tactful and helpful in giving feedback during our practice sessions and gave us a glimpse of her own experience in voice over in a variety of settings. We're fortune to be learning from an established professional in the field who is eager to share her wisdom and know-how with eager beginners!"
This is not Lin's first foray into the field of teaching. She taught voice-over and copy reading at the CSB School of Broadcasting. About sharing her experience in the VO industry she says, "Instructing keeps me on my toes, and helping to groom the future talents in the world is exhilarating!"
Paula Lin is the founder and President of The Definitive Voice & Word, LLC, a successful VO and editorial business. She is also a multi-award-winning broadcast journalist.
Lin's professional affiliations have included: CNN, Reuters, Public Affairs Group, Washington Convention Center Authority, Montgomery County Public Schools, Peach State Public Radio, National Public Radio, Atlanta Public Television, and various New York - tri-state radio stations.

Voice Actress Debbie Irwin Co-Narrates Incessant Visions
Over the past year voice over actress Debbie Irwin has been working with Duki Dror on his new documentary, Incessant Visions, an homage to the life of German Jewish Expressionist architect, Erich Mendelsohn.
As Nazism expanded out of Germany, Mendelsohn fled, carrying his career through England, Israel, and finally to the Bay area, where he taught at UC Berkeley. Mendelsohn was influenced by Franz Marc and the Blue Rider group; his own work proved influential to architects of his time, like Frank Lloyd Wright, to some of today's most innovative architects like Frank Ghery, and Daniel Libeskind.
His design is revered and can be seen around the world from the Einstein Tower, Schocken department stores, Universum Cinema in Germany; the Mt. Scopus Campus of Hadassah Hospital and the Weitzman House in Israel; to many private homes and a hospital in the San Francisco Bay area.
"As a director, working with Debbie has 'broadened the canvas' and expanded the dramatic latitude that I could use in my film," said Dror.
The story is told through correspondence between Mendelsohn and his wife, Luise, an accomplished cellist, whose voice Irwin narrates.
"This project and the character development of Louise Mendelsohn evolved over time," Irwin recalls. "It was a great opportunity to show the powerful influence she had in her husband's work and career. As they say, behind every great man...."
Dror uses contemporary images and modern reflections of Mendelsohn's work to illuminate the significance of his life and the timelessness of his design.
Incessant Visions will premier in the US on Thursday July 28th at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.

Joy Lyn Shaw Achieves The Ultimate Work/Life Balance Through Voice Overs
After seven years in radio broadcasting and baby number two on the way Joy Lyn Shaw decided it was time to stop the rat-race.
"I wanted to be with my children so doing voice over from home seemed the perfect solution. I get to care for and watch my children grow each day." Shaw adds, "Plus I can support our family financially through voiceover. I get the best of both worlds...an amazing job and an involved family life."
While attending College, her brother decided to leave his radio job and asked her if she'd be interested in applying to replace him.
Shaw remembers thinking, "Sure, I could use a little extra money to spend while I get through college." I never imagined it would set me on a path that would lead me to where I am today. I got the job and ended up working at college radio stations and changing my major midway through from science education to broadcast journalism. I spent 7 years in the radio/television world and then left when I was pregnant with my second child to start my voice over business."
Decades later Shaw has a solid client base and is continuing to build her business online through sites like Voices.com and Joylynshaw.com where demos of her voice work are available.
"I can really lose myself in a project and that's therapy for me...to forget about my own life for a moment and dig into someone else's," says Shaw. "Who doesn't want to be a voice over artist?"
Joy Lyn Shaw can be reached at joy@joylynshaw.com or1-801-602-8283.

Cal Koat Helps World Beat Obtain Global Exposure
In a world of corporate media giants, voice talent and broadcaster Cal Koat has pioneered a website that caters to a small but growing segment of music lovers with specific, discerning tastes.

Heading into its 10th year the program has built a loyal and growing fan base around the world that has an appreciation for modern expressions of Celtic music such as Celtronica, Celt Punk, and New Traditional.
About Cal Koat
Cal Koat has worked in Greater Vancouver radio for thirty years, twenty-five of those specifically in multicultural broadcasting, most notably as International Program Director of 96.1 FM, CHKG and AM 1470, CJVB, Fairchild Radio and executive producer of world.beats on Channel M.

He has been presented with the Canadian Association Of Broadcaster's highest honour for Canadian Talent Development, The Gold Ribbon Award, recognizing 96.1 FM's World Music Spectacular for excellence in the promotion and development of Canada's world music artists.
