Not a One Hit Wonder

Published by Lin Parkin

October 17, 2013

You have definitely heard Jerry Buckner more than once. Following a career in the music business that produced several hits including the classic 80's hit, "Pac Man Fever," the theme to "WKRP In Cincinnati," and the Top 10 hit "On and On" by Anne Murray, Jerry was a character actor doing a variety of voices on a network of radio stations.

That success led to being a highly-sought after voice talent for a number of major clients, including The History Channel, where you may recognize Jerry's voice as the narrator for the reality show "Big Shrimpin." This industry maverick is now taking the next step, and combining his voice talent with his music savvy.

With that in mind the idea for an internet video program was born called "The 1 Hit Wonders Show."

Bill DeWees does not fit the typical actor mold. A self-described "business guy," DeWees broke into the voice over industry 8 years ago after the corporation he worked for downsized operations. Working his way through the industry, the projects have become more and more global in nature. After securing actor John Cusack for the American market, Chevrolet was seeking a voice to represent the brand for their worldwide ad campaign.

DeWees became their answer when the auto giant revealed that he was on their shortlist and Bill immediately sent in his audition. He was signed on for the German commercial and the Chevy Spark ad and became the "American voice that helps project a great American brand throughout the world."

Top Florida Voice-Over Artist Launches Christian Music Show On Blog Talk Radio

Published by Lin Parkin

May 29, 2012

Accomplished voice-over artist, Lauren Holladay, started 2012 by launching a new radio show on www.blogtalkradio.com called Beauty for Ashes.

Beauty for Ashes Radio is Holladay's first solo foray into the world of webcasting. On the program she plays contemporary Christian music, hymns, and gospel favorites. Between track lists, Holladay speaks with her audience in the online chat room and encourages listeners to call in with requests or for prayer.

The show airs once a month from her newly upgraded recording studio and typically runs for two hours. About her inspiration for the show, Holladay said, "I was a radio DJ for many years and I evolved into a voice over talent from there. I miss doing radio and playing music, so I wanted to do both. Be a radio DJ and keep up my voice over work! 'Beauty For Ashes' allows me to be my own Program Director and play Inspiring Music for Spiritual people."

The launch of Beauty for Ashes Radio builds on the success of another online program that Holladay runs with her husband, Mark. On Ears to Hear Radio, the Holladays discuss spiritual, political, cultural and other current issues from a Biblical perspective. The show regularly has special guests and benefits from an active listener base that calls in to take part in the conversation.

Lauren's launch of Beauty for Ashes radio was a natural move for someone with more than 15 years of major market radio experience. That time as an on-air personality also allowed her to move seamlessly into the world of voice-overs.

The transition to full-time voice-over actor was aided by online marketplaces that connect freelance voice artists with prospective clients. Through sites like Voices.com, Lauren has generated a great deal of business and rapidly grown her brand. Recognized as "everyone's favorite Mom," her webpage has found its way to the number six spot in the Top (100) Favorites list for businesses looking to hire talent.

President Lincoln honoured by Grandfather-Granddaughter voice over team

Published by Lin Parkin

February 15, 2012

With Presidents' Day just around the corner, globally recognized voice actor Skip Orem partnered with his granddaughter to create a video about Lincoln's Gettysburg address.

The project is narrated by Skip's granddaughter, eight-year-old Patricia Orem, and is meant to be used for educational purposes. It tells the story of President Lincoln's famous speech dedicating the Civil War Battlefield at Gettysburg Pennsylvania on November 19, 1863. Skip plays a number of supporting character roles and used his experience as an audio engineer to produce the video.

Orem is a professional actress and her work on the project was her first foray into the world of voice over. About his experience working with her Skip said, "It was rewarding for me because I got to work with my granddaughter and use my decades of off-camera experience to introduce her to voice work."

More and more educators are using online resources to do research and engage their students. Skip thought that making the video available for free on his new website and YouTube channel would help peak interest in the significance of the Gettysburg address.

Skip said of the project, "I thought it would be a neat way to let young kids know the human and emotional part of the Gettysburg event. That way, as they continue to learn about it in school, it will become more than just a date and a place. Who knows, it may excite a special interest in the subject of history in someone."

Voice Actress Debbie Irwin Co-Narrates Incessant Visions

Published by Lin Parkin

July 19, 2011

Debbie Irwin.jpgOver the past year voice over actress Debbie Irwin has been working with Duki Dror on his new documentary, Incessant Visions, an homage to the life of German Jewish Expressionist architect, Erich Mendelsohn.

As Nazism expanded out of Germany, Mendelsohn fled, carrying his career through England, Israel, and finally to the Bay area, where he taught at UC Berkeley. Mendelsohn was influenced by Franz Marc and the Blue Rider group; his own work proved influential to architects of his time, like Frank Lloyd Wright, to some of today's most innovative architects like Frank Ghery, and Daniel Libeskind.

His design is revered and can be seen around the world from the Einstein Tower, Schocken department stores, Universum Cinema in Germany; the Mt. Scopus Campus of Hadassah Hospital and the Weitzman House in Israel; to many private homes and a hospital in the San Francisco Bay area.

"As a director, working with Debbie has 'broadened the canvas' and expanded the dramatic latitude that I could use in my film," said Dror.

The story is told through correspondence between Mendelsohn and his wife, Luise, an accomplished cellist, whose voice Irwin narrates.

"This project and the character development of Louise Mendelsohn evolved over time," Irwin recalls. "It was a great opportunity to show the powerful influence she had in her husband's work and career. As they say, behind every great man...."

Dror uses contemporary images and modern reflections of Mendelsohn's work to illuminate the significance of his life and the timelessness of his design.

Incessant Visions will premier in the US on Thursday July 28th at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.

Joy Lyn Shaw Achieves The Ultimate Work/Life Balance Through Voice Overs

Published by Lin Parkin

June 14, 2011

Joy Lyn Shaw.jpgAfter seven years in radio broadcasting and baby number two on the way Joy Lyn Shaw decided it was time to stop the rat-race.

"I wanted to be with my children so doing voice over from home seemed the perfect solution. I get to care for and watch my children grow each day." Shaw adds, "Plus I can support our family financially through voiceover. I get the best of both worlds...an amazing job and an involved family life."

While attending College, her brother decided to leave his radio job and asked her if she'd be interested in applying to replace him.

Shaw remembers thinking, "Sure, I could use a little extra money to spend while I get through college." I never imagined it would set me on a path that would lead me to where I am today. I got the job and ended up working at college radio stations and changing my major midway through from science education to broadcast journalism. I spent 7 years in the radio/television world and then left when I was pregnant with my second child to start my voice over business."

Decades later Shaw has a solid client base and is continuing to build her business online through sites like Voices.com and Joylynshaw.com where demos of her voice work are available.

"I can really lose myself in a project and that's therapy for me...to forget about my own life for a moment and dig into someone else's," says Shaw. "Who doesn't want to be a voice over artist?"

Joy Lyn Shaw can be reached at joy@joylynshaw.com or1-801-602-8283.
