Industry Report Will Go Deeper Next Year

Last week I had published the annual Report on the Voice Over Industry that was well received. Thanks to all the people who blogged about it.
At voxmarketising, Peter O'Connell has some praise as well as shared some dislikes that I'd like to discuss here.
Let's run though some of the comments shall we?
A Simple Slideshow
I enjoyed presenting the information in a graphical manner, as opposed to the lengthy text versions done in years past.
With a decision to provide the information as a PowerPoint presentation, rather than a white paper, I was subject to keeping information to a minimum and often omitting sources. Upon further reflection, a simple "Sources" slide at the back of the presentation would be helpful.
Have More Recommendations
Also with respect to limited space, I wasn't able to add "Recommendations" or suggested next steps on how to capitalize on current trends such as the popularity of iPhone applications, videogames or audiobooks. Perhaps a series of future blog posts would be a more suitable venue?
Comparing Voices.com to voice123
Four years ago when I started writing annual reports, they were for internal purposes only, which explains the competitive research elements. This is the most simple and straightforward reason why I've included a Time on Site chart comparing Voices.com to voice123. The fact is, Voices.com has more to offer and as a result, the site engages visitors at a higher level.
Voice Acting Hub Growth
The report stated that the Facebook Group has grown over 1200% since it started just a few short months ago. Frankly, the Voice Acting Hub is the only group with statistics that I had access to. If someone else cares to share their stats, please do so in the comments. It would be interesting to comparing numbers. TouchGraph, Interesting But Not Well Explained
Touch Graph is a fascinating little application that lets you visually map niches on the Internet. This slide could have easily been expanded into two or three slides offering further explanation and tips on how to run your own reports. Agreed, a link would have been helpful, and I'll add this in next year's report.
Charge for a More Detailed Report
Speaking of next year's report, it will still be free. Why charge when the purpose was to inspire voice talent to explore new opportunities?
Again, the point is to get people thinking about different areas within the business that they could be addressing and inspire the production of new demos, new marketing campaigns and more recognition for our industry.
We'll be working with partners intimately involved with certain areas of the industry with the purpose of presenting their statistics in addition to our own for the next report to give a better rounded perspective and offering of information to the public and those most interested.

Excellent response by you here for two reasons:
1. You saw the comments exactly as they were meant to be received - as a way to help build on an idea, not tear it down. By seeing such a post as mine (with Philip's comments as well) as constructive rather than as an attack as I am quite sure one NYC based voice over related company might have (based on previous outbursts by them) you're already miles (kilometers ;) ahead.
2. You actually responded. Social media is about conversation and you more than get it...you excel at it (well, there's a talented lady I believe who helps you a bit too in your office on that front).
Great that you are keeping it free but I am always looking for new revenue ideas. Mine was just one.
Great too that there will be more content, better facts and more information. It will give the report more credence and Voices.com more cache.

I DEVOURED the report, and was also frustrated that the TouchGraph graph was not more accessible. I went so far as to register, but balked at downloading the program for the 60-day free trial, 'cause I'm not sure that's what it meant when you said: "enter the keyword voice over". I had to go through all that to see the graph?
That was my singular frustration. All else was easily digestible and edifying. It confirmed some of my ventures in this business, and made me want to redirect emphasis in others.
I don't think you can overstate the need to be technologically, relationally, and socially adept in today's world to make a decent run at new opportunities in marketing into this field.

Hi David, Peter and Dave,
Thanks for keeping the conversation going with regard to the report. I agree with David that the report should be freely available at present.
There's so much opportunity out there to really bring this industry to the fore. By offering the report as a free resource, members of the press who may want to reference it as a source for an article or report will have fewer barriers to the information, and people who are working in the voice over industry will be able to glean helpful tidbits to further propel their careers and receive some statistical encouragement regarding what lay in wait around the corner.
What excites me most about these reports is that there is always room for more content, ideas and projections. Involving our partners is a wonderful step to further fleshing out specificities outside of our primary focus. This kind of effort (also a combined effort across the board) is unprecedented in voice over and we're up for the challenge.

I been a member of Voices.com for only a few weeks. Thanks for creating such a user friendly web site! I've been getting a lot of practice by auditioning for so many jobs! (On the day I land my first job, I'll comment in the Vox Daily blog about it!) I just finished reading the "Report on the Voice Over Industry: 2009." Thanks for sharing the Powerpoint information in such a clear and concise format! It reaffirms my new career choice! Trish Basanyi is my mentor/entrepreneur coach, and she too feels that social networking is as important as technology to further one's career. It's encouraging to know I'm in the slight majority (female) and a tiny minority (18% because of my Master's Degree.) As a former teacher, I was fascinated by your research that supports economic growth in the industry, in spite of what's happening with the national economy. Hope and a healthy work ethic is what all of us need to have!
