VOX Daily Formatting Revisited

Every so often I ask you about what you would like to see here on VOX Daily.

The last time I asked, there were some great suggestions that I implemented through VOX Daily itself as well as have addressed through Voice Over Times.

Today, I'd like to let you in on some ideas I've been mulling over with regard to how my schedule and the content on VOX Daily is organized each day.

Email

For those of you who blog, you know that coming up with something on a regular basis for your readers is a challenge in itself, let alone the writing that goes into it.

Today I'd like to throw a few questions out to you that I've pondered over the last several days.

1. VOX Daily Themes

What would you think if VOX Daily featured a different subject pertaining to voice overs each day of the week? Let's say for example, Mondays were "Business" days, Tuesdays covered elements of "Technology", and so on.

Does that kind of structure appeal to you as a reader or do you like the random creativity that is currently gracing the blog?

2. Voice Over Workshop Postings

How do you feel about the number of voice over workshops that are posted on the blog? I haven't received any negative feedback about posting classes, however, I struggle with how to present the classes to you and wonder if you appreciate seeing them on the blog or if you perceive them as advertisements.

To be absolutely clear, I do not receive any compensation for posting about workshops or conducting reviews. I regard it as a public service for the voice over community.

In former years, I posted a summary of classes on a monthly basis but sometime in 2007 I began posting articles about individual workshop opportunities.

Have these individual postings on VOX Daily influenced you one way or the other to attend a given workshop?

3. Do you read Voice Over Times?

This is more of a curiosity than anything, but do you also read Voice Over Times to get industry news? Voice Over Times is the news website of the voice over industry and it covers breaking stories about voice acting and voice actors. In the future, I am going to be writing less "news" on VOX Daily and be focusing in on tutorials, editorials, interviews and the like.

Do you have any comments about what I've written or about what you would like to see?

Best wishes,

Stephanie

One small but helpful improvement to Vox Daily would be to include the specific information in the subject line, for example, for today: "Vox Daily - Improving and Revising" instead of just "Vox Daily."

Many issues of Vox Daily are worth saving and reading over later, but there is no way to tell them apart. Till now, to remedy this, I've been forwarding the archive-worthy Vox Dailies to myself with a more descriptive subject line and then saving it.

As far as themes per day, I think that is too restrictive. Stephanie, you already have your hands full. It would be more in the flow of information to bring to the fore whatever is newsworthy at the moment - be it business, technology or whatever. There are some weeks when technology is hot - and business isn't. Other times the reverse is true. Vox Daily has been free to follow whatever is newsworthy when it is newsworthy and I think that's good.

The workshop heads-up feature is also helpful. With so much going on, we could miss something interesting happening in our area if you didn't mention it here. I probably wouldn't go looking but I do read Vox Daily daily.

      Hey Stephanie!

      RE: 1. VOX Daily Themes
Themes might be a good idea in the sense that it would help YOU organize your thoughts, and give you some structure. Honestly, whatever you decide to do, will probably work!. As you know, nothing on the "Net is set in stone, so you could always try it & see how you feel about it... if it's too constricting, go back to "randomness" ;-)

      RE:2. Voice Over Workshop Postings
I think it's GREAT that you post about workshops. As a Voice talent committed to improving, I'm always on the lookout for the next workshop/class, so YES keep doing that!

RE: 3. Do you read Voice Over Times?
YES! I love it. It's a great overview of what's going on in the various aspects of the industry!

As usual, you're doing a great job! Thanks!

      Peace!

        Hi Stephanie!

I really like the variety of thing that you cover, but I think that if you did do a specific thing for each day of the week it would make it easier for you to come up with a topic each day. At least then it would be a narrower scope that you have to select from. How about doing a feature on rates sometime? We all have our own rates, although probably similar, but often times a custom project comes up where I am not sure what to charge. Maybe others have the same issue every now and again. I like what I see at The Voiceover Times too. Keep it up!

I like the idea of different topics on different days of the week.

I also consider the listing of coaching sessions as an advertisment and don't think it belongs in VOX daily.

            Hi Betty,

Thank you for commenting and for your feedback!

I wish I could include more details in the heading of the email but alas, it is not yet possible. I contacted FeedBurner (the web service that delivers the VOX Daily emails) and it isn't possible to include the headline of the article alongside the name of the blog as it appears in the subject heading you receive as a subscriber.

Maybe in the future they'll work that in, but for now, it's simply the name of the blog.

I appreciate hearing your feedback with regard to scheduling and also the workshop opportunities.

            Best wishes,

            Stephanie

              Hi Liz,

Thank you for commenting and for sharing your thoughts! I'm glad to hear that the volume of workshop postings does not bother you ;)

I might try a bit of the structuring, but as you said, nothing is written in stone!

Thank you for the support Liz.

                Hi Tom,

Thank you for contributing to the conversation and for your idea about a posting on rates. We haven't gone down that road in a little while and it's high time we did.

                Great ideas, all :)

                Best,

                Stephanie

                  Hi Stephanie,

                  1) I do enjoy reading VOX Daily. I also feel the title says is all. Short & sweet, and subsequently I feel there's no need to change it.

                  2) I have no problems with V/O class postings, just not all the time. (obviously) Maybe you can group them together when you have 3-4 that come up at a time.

                  3) I like VO Times, but can't get to it every time. Hope you folks stick to the voiceover aspect of it and don't meander away from your core audience too much.

                  Thanks for listening!

                    Hi Gregory,

Thank you for commenting and I appreciate hearing your point of view. Could you suggest where the workshop listings might be a better fit?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts as well as what others think too :)

                    Best wishes,

                      Hi Bobbin,

Thank you very much for commenting and for your suggestions. I like the one about the workshops. Do you mean list 3 or 4 in a single post? Just checking.

Voice Over Times is indeed going to stick to focusing in on voice overs and voice actors, no veering off in any other directions :) I find that there are many fascinating areas within voice over to discover and highlight, some of which have not been touched on or discussed as often as other elements.

Please keep the suggestions and feedback coming! It's all truly very helpful.

                      Thank you,

                      Stephanie

                        Hi again,

Yes, grouping all the workshops together in a single post would work for me. It would make things easier and faster to find in the archives, too.

Ever see the musical play, "I love you you're perfect, now change" ? Just kidding- LOL!

                        Thanks again,

YES to Question 1 - Themes are excellent idea. I am learning my way in this biz and this site and this is important structure.

YES to Question 2 - I definitely could use some contacts in this area as I don't know whom to contact.

NO - I am not aware of the Times.

One suggestion/question/problem: I have trouble viewing the right-most words, phrase of this blog. I am using Internet Explorer Version 6. Any help you can provide is appreciated.
