How To Make Money in VO (even if you're not in the Big Apple or La La Land)

One of the myths of voice over is that you need to be in a major center to make money doing what you love. That may have been the case decades ago, but thanks to technology, affordable audio recording equipment and principally, the Internet, making a living as a voice over artist living outside of New York City and Los Angeles is not only doable but an achievable reality if you put your heart, mind and resources into making a career as a professional voice over talent.

Julie Williams' 5 CD set (now in its 3rd edition) gives you some very helpful tools that assist you in the marketing aspect of your business, focusing on the single most challenging aspect of pursuing voice over as a professional... that would be making a consistent amount of money to make a living!

Listeners will learn how to do just that with this comprehensive course in voice over marketing for talent who want to compete in the global voice over marketplace, regardless of where they live.

The course includes almost 5 hours of extensive information from national voice talent Julie Williams as well as feature interviews with industry experts Gabrielle Nistico, Kristine Oller, Rob Sciglimpaglia, Stephanie Ciccarelli, Frank Maranzino, Larry Maizlish, and Jason Sikes.

Voice over pro and author, Harlan Hogan, described Julie's CD set as œA wonderful source! It™s up-to-date, upbeat, and full of practical, pragmatic advice. I really enjoyed the interviews with various experts in the industry. Well worth the investment, even if you DO live in NY or LA!

Ooooh, perfect for me. I'm not in LA and I am just outside of NY.
    Yeah... me.

I do live in the L.A. area, but that doesn't make this an easy business. I am basically volunteering my voice to build my resume. I did a political ad for free two weeks ago. I did imaging for Radio Lollipop, the radio station inside Children's Hospital Orange County, for free last month. I am going to be the registration area PA announcer at the Orange County Race for The Cure next weekend for free. Don't get me wrong. I love helping out worthy causes, but I would like to eventually like to start making some money, too. Substitute teaching is getting really old, and my school district had to cut sub pay 10% this year due to budget cuts (thanks Arnold). Now that I've got my recording booth built in my new house, I can start auditioning from home again (woohoo!).

As a voice talent living in Israel, I'm somewhat far from LA and NY. This makes auditioning for jobs that are to be recorded on location completely irrelevant for me. Furthermore, meeting a same-day deadline means staying up all night waiting for a script, recording the script, and waiting for the client's approval, since "same day" US time translates to "same night" Israel time, due to the time difference. There is no doubt that living overseas has its challenges for a voice talent who records in US English.

Regardless of where one lives, I think that learning how to make a *consistent* amount of money from voiceovers is of high interest to many of us. I would absolutely LOVE to win this CD set.

          Have a great week,

I would love to win Julie Williams's CD set as I am just trying to get started in the business and do find the marketing aspect the most challenging part of the business overall. I live in a small market (Kansas City) and need all the advice I can get.

I am new to the business and I am interested in learning as much as I can. Any pointers from anyone in the business would be greatly appreciated. What is an effective computer recording software and microphone to purchase, for I will be utilizing my laptop for all my work.

Are there specific voices in demand that I might want to consider.

                  Hi Stephanie,

I would REALLY like to win this CD set. Living in South, Central Wisconsin, it is essential to use networking, email, and of course the Internet to grow my voice over business. With sites like voices.com, guys like me are able to have access to auditions we could never have dreamed of just a few years ago! I just built a new studio in my home (a basement side room) last year. I have steady clients in Michigan, Iowa, Texas and New Jersey that send me work every month and I am trying to expand to doing audio books and other long form projects. I remember the days of using the local radio station to audition for agency work and sending reel to reel tapes! Thanks for all you do and let's keep plugging away!

                    Good Morning Stephanie,

I hope it is not too late to win Julie's CD on "How to Make Money in Voice-Overs Even If You're Not in NY or LA". I would absolutely love to receive this CD. I purchased her other CD on Proven Voice-over Techniques and it was a big help. It has been a slow process for me to get going with my VO biz, but now that both my children are in college I am finally in a place where I can devote more time to it. I know that her new CD would be just the blessing that could help me get moving in the right direction.

Oh and I just want to say that I love all the encouragement and help that you provide to all of us out here trying to make it in a very competitive business.

                    Thank you,

                    Susan Wade

Wow, what an excellent resource to give to folks who don't live in either place. While I can think "I'm not in Kansas anymore", I am! So, I'd be thrilled to receive this package to put me on a more level playing field as my left and right coast friends!

I'm on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and built my own production studio in 2001 when two of the three local production houses CLOSED! The Internet has caused an explosion in this industry! Is there any other industry that has benefitted more than ours? Maybe Ebay, but that was an industry CREATED by the Internet. There have never been such wonderful opportunities to match voices with clients. I've been self-employed as a writer and voiceover talent for 20 years, but now all I do is voiceovers because of the tremendous surge in opportunities. Plus we can find so many resources (not to mention support from others) online. I'm always looking for new ways to sell my services...these CDs sound fantastic! Thanks!

Hello, I'm Ed Autry, formerly with Armed Forces Radio.

Although my afternoon drive-time radio show was carried by all six radio affiliates of the American Forces Korea Network, I realized after I left the military that what I missed most wasn't the live radio shows, but rather the 'production work'... voicing 'spots' for both AFKN Radio and Television in the production studio.

So, I recently launched Ed Autry Voiceovers. Although I had done some television commercials in the Kansas City market, we moved a little over a year ago to a small town 50 miles east of Kansas City. So, now... here I am with my professional microphone, some dandy sound proofing and my laptop.

The concept of now having the ability to do some voicework and instantly E-mail that MP3 file (...or whatever file format requested) to anywhere in the world, is astounding. Yes, a lot has changed since my first live radio show in the summer of 1972 at KOLE, a Top 40 station in Port Arthur, Texas.

My love of voiceover, and the opportunity to once again use my many character voices which I used to do 'jock IDs', and in theater, has rekindled that same excitment I knew so many years ago. So, yes... I really want to 'make this thing go'... and would very much appreciate the boost of having a professional, like Julie Williams tell me all about it on her CDs. Well, isn't THAT a coincidence? The 'air name' I chose for that very first radio job back at KOLE was... Ed 'Williams'.

Ed Autry, A Real 'Veteran' Voice

And I know that I do not know enough about marketing!! I am just beginning my "voice-over career" and would like to get it right from the beginning. I'm retired (on a very fixed income) and frankly don't want to waste time making mistakes. So I really need this marketing course!!!!

Hi Julie! I'm from the Boston area. Voices.com has been a great way for me to audition, but being a newbie it's really a great opportunity to rehearse, and hone my craft.

I often come up with ideas on how to market my services, and often wonder "Am I doing the right thing,or Am I doing this right?" There's also competition with my checkbook as to which methods to try. Your CD Marketing guide would make a lot of those decisions easier to make. Between the workshops, coaching, equipment, books (all very valuable investments for everyone), sometimes things have to get on the priority list.

It would be nice to get a Christmas gift in September!

Thanks for a great site with a lot of helpful information.
I especially liked Phyllis K Day's Podcast (wink wink)

I am a 41 year young full time worker and part time college student majoring in Broadcasting and minoring in Music. I am currently trying to put one of my children in college (the first of three but the youngest), who happens to be the first also. I am so appreciative for this website. Even going to school for Broadcasting, I still feel a bit empty and these CDs, I'm sure would be just what I need.

Your article is very informative and the headline grabbed my attention as soon as it turned up in my email inbox. I'm learning that the competition in this industry is a force to be reckoned with and I can use all of the help that I can get.

I also had my own radio show sponsored through Junior Achievement, of which I was the President of the Company, RASCO 156. I did voice overs for a small town in Iowa - Council Bluffs, on KRCB Radio and even interviewed Bill Cosby at a book signing and used clips from it to intersperse into my radio show (Every Saturday 11am to 1pm). I worked for the radio station typing logs, writing ads, contacting contest winners, keeping track of the contests.....WHAT I DID WRONG WAS NOT follow through WITH MY LOVE FOR RADIO. I am now 60, a retired paralegal, community activist, and have a voice that needs to be heard. PLEASE CONSIDER ME. I would love to win her CD/DVD's. Like the way she presents. PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. I can still do some voices, I can sound young or old, I am wasting away here in Gulfport, Florida. I need help. Tampa Bay only sounds like a big place........it is like living in lots of small towns running into each other. Boy do I need advice on where and when to go next.

This training course really interests me because, living on the coast of Connecticut, I am always involved in the struggle to become more successful, not only financially, but as a professional, andI'm unable to move to a "major market", so this would be right up my alley. I'd really appreciate being considered for the giveaway and I really enjoy the info you provide.

I have been out of the game for long enough that I probably need to re-invent my marketing plan. I would love to get some advice on how to do that from Ohio!

I have always wanted to be in the voice-over business and I live in Harvey, Illinois 60426. Harvey is a South Suburb of Chicago, Illinois. I lot of people identify with Chicago, but not with Harvey. Even though arts and culture can be popular in all places with the right kind of marketing, people will never remember Harvey, before the people remember Chicago.

So, this CD set could teach me how to market myself in Harvey and still have a lucrative career.

I have read Harlan Hogan's book and he may have a valid tip and advice about "How To Make Money in VO" for us all.

Years ago I worked in radio and was in love with the work. Unfortunately, I left an industry that I loved for another to make more money. I really want to get back into voiceover work and have begun buying equipment to set up a home studio. While researching books written about voiceovers, I have found that there is very little written about how to market yourself. Most of what is published is elementary material tucked away in the last chapter of a book.

I came across this program recently and it sounds like just what I have been looking for. Thanks for the opportunity to win it.

I do need to keep the dream alive and pursue this in the future. Thanks for your efforts.

I also have a weird habit of critiquing tv commercial voice overs. My husband thinks I nuts. This morning I found myself mimicking a commercial on tv and had an epiphany, why not put this strange habit to good use. Maybe I could do voice overs. So I started surfing the net and found your site.

Needing to do the voice work (and wanting to for that "personal appeal") to promote the Event via a TV and Radio Campaign, I thought perhaps I should do some voice over research. And I found your site. Sounds like I may be in for a treat... and I am sure to make it all sound like a treat.

I recently got laid off from a station after five and a half years of service, and decided to switch gears at this point. I want to focus on the two elements of the business that I always found most enjoyable...Copywriting and Voiceover work.

Collecting unemployment isn't exactly my style, so I'm hoping to get something up and running A.S.A.P. Therefore, I could use all the guidance I can get. Please enter me in the drawing to win Julie's CD set. It sounds like it would be very helpful to me.
