Mother holding her attentive, smiling newborn babyWhat would you say are the most wonderful sounds you've ever heard?

Does hearing anything in particular lift your spirits?

Whether it's music, the voice of a loved one, or birds who sing sweetly in the trees I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Share them today on this VOX Daily article.

Sweet Sounds

This morning I heard what I consider to be one of the loveliest and sweetest sounds I have ever heard. Upon letting it sink into my grateful ears, I knew that I needed to share a list of the sounds that have endeared themselves to me and also give you an opportunity to reflect on what yours might be.

As is often said, the best things in life are free including much of what we experience through our five senses. For the purposes of this post, we'll focus on hearing.

My Top 10 Sweetest Sounds

1. The sound of a newborn baby cooing contentedly.
2. The sound of a family member singing when they don't know you're listening.
3. The sound of the breeze in the trees.
4. The voice of my husband.
5. The still, small voice that speaks in my heart.
6. The sound of waves lapping upon the shore.
7. The sound of silence.
8. A familiar hymn in times of trouble.
9. When someone says they love you, that they're genuinely sorry or that you're forgiven.
10. Good news, specifically the sort that makes you leap for joy.

What we hear with our ears, even if we can't see what makes us happiest with our eyes, can be seen by the heart.

What's On Your List?

Looking forward to hearing about the sweetest sounds you've ever heard!

Best wishes,

Stephanie

Great list, Stephanie! This is what I would add:

    1. The lullabies my mom sung to me as a little girl.....
(When she sings them to me now, I forget that she is 83 and I am 53)

    2. The sound of my kids and my husband laughing...

    3. The sound of a bottle of champagne being opened....

    4. The sound of my sister leaving me a voicemail, singing a song from the 60's that we loved, which she's just heard on the radio....

    5. The sound of my voice on the radio or TV when I least expect it...

    6. The sound of popcorn in the microwave when you're settling in for a good movie...

    7. The sound of the apartment door opening when someone in my family comes home...

    8. The sound of my best friend's voices....

    9. The sound of my little nieces' and nephews' voices, who I rarely see, on the phone...

    10. The sound of my Golden Retriever, Sonnet, when we haven't seen her for a little while and she cries with happiness on our return...

While fishing one morning from a boat on a lake I heard the sounds of children playing and giggling quietly outside their cottage against a backdrop of absolute silence.

This morning, it was my dear wife loading the toaster so I could grind on with editing. More lyrically, the cat purring and Monteverdi.

The voice of my Papa, with the Hungarian accent he never could eradicate. (He's not doing well now, and sometimes has difficulty speaking, so I cherish every conversation).
Night sounds, when I'm out on a walk.
              Cooing doves. (and newborns)
Actually, I'd echo everything on Stephanie's list as well as so many of the others.... What a blessing to be reminded of the beauty of those things we experience through hearing.

Since I am a music freak, Stephanie, it would have to be any great singer performing Nessun Dorma. Second to that is the sound of the ocean which is also music to my ears. Thanks for a lovely Vox Daily.

                    Sincerely,

                                            Hello Stephanie,

Your list of sounds is fabulous. One of my favorites is on your list (waves crashing into the shore) but the one thing that stands out for in terms of sounds and drawing inspiration from it is the sound of a symphony orchestra blending harmoniously and producing lush vibrations. There are many other sublte sounds that are good as well but I will stick with that one. Thanks!

Stephanie I hadn't considered the sweetest sounds before. 1-3 The sound of the final bell for a particular boxing bout I was in back in 1968. The sound of the announcer giving the scores. The sound of the crowd cheering. They had booed at the beginning.
4-5 Loons on a quiet lake in northern Wisconsin with a cowbell in the distance on a hillside.
6-12 I step out side most every night to check out the quiet night "noise" in the countryside where I live. Some times it's just silence, other times the frogs, coyotes, an owl or a distant dog bark and the Amtrack train horns while passing through the near by villages. And in winter a fresh blanket of acoustical snow that puts a real nice hush on every thing. That's 12, I better stop here.

Ocean waves, a choir singing a hymn, my kids laughing.... these are the sounds I love!

I agree with your list but another sweet sound is hearing a toddler learn to laugh genuinely. You know...that real belly laugh. The development of our young is amazing in itself.

Another is listening to a story from a youngster's point of view or an elder remembering something from their younger days.

Great list! It's the simple things that make life pleasant.

The sound of horses galloping, bacon sizzling, the wind in the trees and music vocals sung with a lot of passion.

Beautiful post, Stephanie. Thank you. I loved all the lists, but Jack Bair did a wonderful job describing some sounds dear to me. I love to hear Cowbells too, especially at a Cyclecross (bicycle) race:) There's the sound of my Husband, Singing a Silly Song he's making up while he brews our espresso in the morning. Fire Crackling in a wood stove, Aspen Trees, Crickets, Humming Birds Singing 'Sweee-eee' as they play in a Burbling Fountain... The Rhythm of my Footfalls as I run along a trail, and the Rhythm of my Breathing as I relax and settle into a calm, comfortable pace... And of course my Cat saying 'Wake up' and 'Welcome home!' Thanks for making me smile, Stephanie!
