Being an actor is a wonderful and rewarding job.
You get to breathe life into characters, become someone you aren't and get paid to play pretend.
That being said, what happens when you realize that the majority of words you speak come from a script and are not your own?
Actor Johnny Depp, a talent whose impressive list of credits runs the gamut with a career spanning 3 decades and numbering over 50 films, has come to that exact realization.
Hear more about Depp's epiphany and share your thoughts by commenting on today's VOX Daily.
Johnny Depp has started to talk about retirement.
In a recent interview with BBC, Johnny Depp was quoted as saying, "I wouldn't say that I'm dropping out any second, but I would say that it's probably not too far away."
Depp is becoming more comfortable with the concept of retiring and his thinking makes a great deal of sense. In a recent cover story in Rolling Stone, Depp shared, "At a certain point, you start thinking, and when you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year, for example, you realize that you've said written words more than you've actually had a chance to say your own words." Depp added, "You start thinking of that as a kind of insane option for a human being."
Let's do a little experiment. How many words do you read as an actor per year?
When you come to the final word count, the tally could be staggering, especially if you are working as much or for as long as Johnny Depp.
I can only imagine the plethora of characters and their lines running around in his head.
Johnny Depp, being the consummate actor that he is, not only spoke those lines but lived them out in his projects. Selective with his roles, his career has been both eclectic and purposeful. Depp invested a significant part of himself into each of his films and was very particular about his work.
A handful of movies that come to mind are Chocolat, Edward Scissorhands, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco and of course the Pirates of the Caribbean. Diverse to say the least, all his characters have one thing in common, that being Johnny Depp who stated in an interview with BBC on this topic that "everything has to come from some basis of truth."
Having poured so much of his life into film, it appears that Depp is seeking to live and speak more fully as himself.
Looking forward to hearing your take on one of the world's favourite actors!
