Ray DolbyRay Dolby, one of the most prolific ambassadors of sound, passed away at his home on September 12, 2013 at the age of 80, ending his struggle with acute Leukemia and Alzheimer's.

An American engineer, Ray became famous for inventing Dolby NR, the noise reduction system that took the "hiss" out of audio recordings.

Born in Portland Oregon he was raised in San Francisco and went on to receive a B.S. in electrical engineering from Stanford University, where he won a Marshall Scholarship for a Ph.D. in physics from Cambridge University.

After studying at Cambridge, Ray became a technical advisor to the United Nations in India. In 1965 he returned to England and officially launched his namesake company, Dolby Laboratories. In the same year he invented the Dolby Sound System in the UK. His first U.S. patent was not filed until four years later. In 1975 he moved back to San Francisco where he established his company headquarters.

Raising ALS Awareness: A Billion for Bob

By Lin Parkin

Bob and Debra Deyan Audies.jpgAudiobook producer Bob Deyan, co-owner of Deyan Audio, is on a mission.

A mission to end ALS.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a terminal motor neuron condition that has no cure and there is little that can be done to slow its progression.

It commonly takes over leg muscles first, then moves to the arms, then chest, eventually making it difficult or completely eliminating the suffers' ability to speak, chew, or swallow.

Unable to function, the muscles in their bodies weaken and atrophy making simple day-to-day activities increasingly difficult. When breathing muscles become affected, ultimately, a permanent ventilator will need to be used in order for the sufferer to survive.

Bob Deyan is living with ALS. Join us in today's VOX Daily to learn about Bob's story and find out how you can help him in his fight against this disease.

1,850 Laid Off At Clear Channel, Layoffs in Broadcast and Beyond To Trigger Boom in Voice Over Market?

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

Comments (11)

On The Air MicrophoneThe economic downturn has changed the priorities and makeup of many companies, including some in the broadcast media industry, causing thousands of people to lose their jobs, many of which are now turning to voice over as a career alternative.

I was curious to see who among those already doing voice over part-time are now finding themselves full-time due to the loss of their positions...

From what I've heard, read and been told, it sounds like there is going to be a wave of people hoping to make voice acting their primary source of income.

Hear from many people affected by this and add your voice to the mix. Anonymous comments in good taste will be approved on this article.

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

Your Vote Counts!

Are you voting today?

If you live in the United States of America, today is the biggest, most monumental election day in generations.

Americans have a choice between electing Illinois Senator Barack Obama (Democrat) or Arizona Senator John McCain (Republican) for the office of the President of the United States.

Whoever is elected today and holds power in Washington, DC, will determine the kind of history is written for the next four years, perhaps the next eight, not just in the US but the world at large.

It's all about democracy!

Wherever you are or whoever you voted for, I want to hear that you did!

Read this article and then leave a comment to let me know that you voted in your country's election, whether in the US, Canada or abroad.

My Precious! Matt Cowlrick To Voice Impression of Gollum For Andy Serkis on TV

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

Comments (6)

Gollum

There Can Only Be One!

For those of you who are fans of the Richard and Judy Show in the UK, some great news!

On Friday October 24th at 8 p.m. on 'Watch' (Sky Channel 109 and Virgin channel 124), Richard and Judy will have a feature showcasing a number of people who can imitate the voice of Gollum, a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (movies directed by Peter Jackson) whose voice has been made famous by the actor Andy Serkis.

In the presence of Andy Serkis, a number of contestants will get their inner Gollum on to be broadcast on the telly nationwide.

Our very own Matt Cowlrick, an Australian voice over artist, is one of the contenders.

Coming off a win in another competition sponsored by Three Mobile in Australia, wherein he also impersonated Gollum, Cowlrick's impression of Gollum won him and a friend $10000 worth of travel, which helped Cowlrick to get over to the UK.

Will lightning strike twice?

Financial Core VS Union : The Real Deal

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

Comments (58)

Jobs

Oil and Water

Public skirmishes between SAG and AFTRA have got the unions in the headlines quite a bit in the past few months.

To sum up, AFTRA went on to talk up the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on their own after suspending their joint bargaining agreement with the Screen Actors Guild, and came out with some kind of solution.

AFTRA's parent union, SAG, is now embroiled in talks following their expired contract (July 1, 2008) with the AMPTP, bargaining for more money and residual pay. The AMPTP has made their final offer (July 2, 2008) and SAG requested more time to study it. No further meetings are scheduled at this point.

There's a lot going on between SAG and AFTRA

AFTRA has an election coming up this fall and SAG is currently running a campaign of their own to the chagrin of AFTRA. For two unions that represent a significant portion of the same people and overlap in a variety of ways, it would be nice if they could get along for the sake of their members, or as some have suggested, merge and unite under one banner.

Where does this leave those in the middle? Is there a middle?

As SAG and AFTRA continue to spar, take a moment to read this article written by a former union member with Financial Core status, Lani Minella, and her take on this often intentionally neglected yet very real dues paying non-member union designation.

What's Going on with SAG and AFTRA?

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

Comments (10)

Jason GeorgeAfter an announcement late last week, it appears that the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) wants to suspend joint bargaining with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

This may be the case for the current governing body of AFTRA but I heard straight from some heavy hitters that the move to suspend joint negotiations is not a decision representative of the entire body of membership, including individuals from the AFTRA Leadership Team who wish to see change, reconcile the differences between the two unions and hope for a merger.

Read this enlightening missive that debunks several myths and misinformation about what is going on behind the scenes from the perspective of working actor and current AFTRA National Board member, Los Angeles local member and LA's fourth vice president, Jason George.

Read this to help you research before making your decision at the vote.

Wiarton Willie VS Punxsutawney Phil

Happy Grounghog Day!

This morning, in Wiarton, ON Canada's own Wiarton Willie proclaimed that there would be only 6 weeks until Spring. With all of the flowers peeping up and unheard of mild weather up in Canada (minus the East Coast!), it's no surprise that our friend declared an Ode to Spring.

Six more weeks of winter or six weeks 'til spring?

Punxsutawney Phil in Punxsutawney, PA USA however, saw his shadow and announced 6 more weeks of Winter...

Disney and Pixar Partner Up

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

The headlines have been all a buzz with Disney and Pixar speculation. Well, the cat's out of the bag and Steve Jobs is now a proud part of the Disney board of directors, bringing along all of the good folks at Pixar Animation to the Disney fold.

What does this acquisition mean? First off, it means that blockbuster feature animated films will be produced more frequently and Disney will show a trendier, more technically advanced visage to the world.

Google Radio Ad Voiceovers

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

Comments (3)

If you're advertising in radio, you'll need a voice!

As you may have heard, Google flexed their muscles and recently bought dMarc Broadcasting of Newport Beach, California. dMarc is a media buying service and digital automation provider for radio. The idea is to capitalize on the radio advertising market, and what better way to be the king of the radio ad slots than to purchase a company that is responsible for doing just that?

This may help out with buyers that want to purchase radio advertising slots, but there is something missing from this equation... Voice-overs.

This begs the question of "Where will Google's future radio advertisers get their voice-overs?"

Consider this. Each voice talent is unique, not to mention each custom recording required of a given company's script. In light of this information, Google advertiser's will have to have a hearty database of professional voice talents to choose from and a proven system for hiring the perfect voice.

Why do advertisers need such a system for hiring voice talent? Just as in any marketplace, the players in the market can vary substantially. One must keep in mind the individual talents experience in the field, their artistic abilities, access to a recording studio, recording fees, and whether or not they are affiliated with a union.

Study: Unfamiliar Voice-Overs are Most Effective

By Stephanie Ciccarelli

Comments (0)

Have you found yourself innocently watching television only to be bombarded by famous voices sending you messages that may or may not agree with their perceived "image"? Celebrities have been known to endorse products or services by means of voice-overs, sometimes coupled with on-camera acting.

While celebrities have notoriety and influence, their reputations from their acting careers or choices made in the public eye may also carry certain connotations or excess baggage that is not intended to coincide with the advertiser's marketing pitch.
